FURNITURE FINISH

Our beautiful collection of Custom made Furniture is handmade by our skilled joiners, using only the best techniques some of which include Mortice and Tenon Joints & Dovetail Joints.
We use Grade A, solid seasoned kiln dried wood to make our table and benches with mortice and tenon joints to the base of our farmhouse sets.

Our furniture is rustic farmhouse and the finish we aim to achieve is of rustic appearance and texture in a shabby chic style to the farmhouse sets.

If you are after an "as new" spray painted factory finish, then maybe our furniture is not for you.

CHAIRS

The chairs we offer with our sets are vintage, we will fully refurbish them for you.

You may choose the vintage chairs from the range we hold in stock.
Please email for options.

We can source alternative chairs for you if the ones we hold in stock are not suitable for you, but this will incur a sourcing fee.

We cannot guarantee to be able to source an identical set of chairs to your requirements as all sets are unique, however we will source a set as close as possible to your requirements.

You may choose your fabric for the re-upholstered chairs from the range of fabrics we offer and this will be included in your quote. The choices available are subject to availability at the time of order.
If you wish to have an alternative to the choices of fabric we offer, a price variation may apply.

All the chair sets we source are all vintage or antique, unique and one off sets, so will show signs of age, layers of previous paint applied, possible knocks and dings, paint drips from previous old layers of paint, very typical of the shabby chic style. Brush strokes may be visible as our chairs are hand painted.

Shabby Chic is a form of interior design where furniture and furnishings are either chosen for their appearance of age and signs of wear and tear, or where new items are distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique. We do not dip the chairs and only lightly sand them prior to priming and painting. These are not new chairs so please do not expect as new.

As all our chairs are vintage and refurbished there may be slight movement to the chairs.
We fully refurbish and strengthen the chairs but as with any vintage wood piece of furniture there may be some level of movement and some movement may occur over time.

We lightly sand, prime and hand paint with numerous coats of paint applied as per manufacturers instructions.

You may email me for a description of your chairs prior to placing the order to avoid any disappointment.

Hairline cracks and movement are part of the natural process of solid wood movement and therefore any hairline cracks or movement that may develop are not considered a defect but part of the woods natural movement.
Our chairs are vintage or antique so will not be as solid as a brand new chair.

We do not offer any form of guarantee with the vintage chairs as they are vintage and not handmade by us.

Paint finished furniture can take up to 3 weeks to fully cure. So please take care with your furniture upon arrival and for the first few weeks until it has fully hardened.
If you do knock the furniture, it will chip.

We can supply a small pot of paint should you accidently chip your hand painted piece of furniture.

All hand painted furniture will chip if knocked, so please take care when moving furniture.

We cannot guarantee the paint finish as we do not make the paint ourselves.

Every computer does show colours differently. The paint and oil finishes in the photos may vary slightly from the actual completed furniture you receive.

KILN DRIED WOOD

Our chunky rustic tables & benches are handmade using Grade A fully seasoned Kiln Dried Wood for the Table Tops with Mortise & Tenon joints to the base of our farmhouse sets and checked for humidity levels.

All of the timber we use is produced from managed forests which are always EUTR compliant. You can be assured that the timber comes from sustainable sources.

All tables and benches are handmade to order so will have variations in colour, finish and wood grain as wood is a natural product so variations are to be expected. Every piece is unique and is rustic in appearance. Different woods may have a different colour to the wood grain depending on the wood, if you are particular about the finish, please email us PRIOR to placing an order for further details.

The table top is a separate structure to the table base on both the Industrial and Farmhouse tables.

On the farmhouse tables, it rests on top of the table base using stretcher plates to allow for natural wood movement so it can still move freely as required allowing for seasonal expansion/contraction.

Wood will expand and contract depending on relative humidity and moisture content changes in the atmosphere.

With wood movement there may be slight seasonal changes to your wood, this is normal and to be expected with any natural wood product.

Hairline cracks may appear on your solid wood items, but these are not cracks but just natural movement of the wood expanding and contracting. This is part of the natural process of solid wood movement and therefore any hairline cracks that may develop are not considered a defect but part of the woods natural movement.

FURNITURE AFTERCARE

All wood must be allowed to come to a state of balance with its environment in order to prevent moisture-related damage. This state of balance is called equilibrium moisture content, or EMC.
For example, if a table top is sealed off with a pvc cover, this will cause naturally ocurring moisture only to penetrate from below the table, the uncovered side. This will cause the lower side to swell while the upper, sealed off side remains the same. This can result in a warp in the table. Without the pvc cover on top, both sides would have absorbed moisture evenly and the table would have expanded and contracted with minimal (or no) warping.

To avoid this from happening, do not cover your table top on a permanent basis as this will imbalance the equilibrium of the table. Only use covers or coasters when in use and remove once you have finished your meal.

***We use wax and oils to protect your table top. To clean the table, lightly dampen a cloth with water or use a microfiber cloth that will cling to dust particles on its own. Wipe up spillages promptly and never allow water to sit on the table top!

****Do not place the table next to a radiator. The temperature changes could damage the wood with warping or splitting. Also, store any extra leaves near the table itself. This ensures that the leaf will not warp or swell/contract differently from the table. If you store the leaf in a basement or attic, the moisture and temperature differential could take its toll.

***Watch humidity levels. As with all woodwork, from flooring to trim, from dining tables to other furnishings, try to keep humidity levels in your home between 40 and 45%. Any lower could crack the wood and any higher could cause swelling. This may mean running a humidifier in the winter and an a/c or de-humidifier in the summer.

WAXED FINISHED WOOD

A wax finish does not have the same protection as Danish Oil, the colour is applied in the same way but it is then finished with a liquid wax.
The wood is not sealed in anyway and can breathe and take on the elements of its surroundings, such as smoke from an open fire.
Rings will occur if mats are not used and spills will be absorbed into the wood.
Waxed wood needs periodical waxing depending on what wear and tear it receives, a chest of drawers would probably benefit from a monthly wax, whilst a table would benefit twice a month.  This is not as labour intensive as it sounds, only the top need be done with a clear wax and following the instructions on the tin.  If a coloured wax is applied the furniture colour will subtly change over time. Six to twelve month intervals it is wise to wax the whole piece. The wax soaks into to the wood keeping the wood hydrated and keeps the colour sharp, if rewaxing was not adhered to the piece would fade and possibly start to split in places.
As wax furniture does absorb dust particles and grease from finger tips and such like, a top tip is to wipe waxed furniture over with baby wipes as they hold just the right amount of moisture.

Waxed furniture is easily restored if damaged has occurred to the finish. There are several products on the market to remove rings and marks.  They will probably not remove these marks completely but they do a pretty good job.  You can solely work on the damaged area and not bother too much with the rest.  You can also rub waxed furniture down with either a very fine grade wire wool or sandpaper, working with the grain and once satisfied that the mark is removed re wax with a colour close or an exact match to the original piece.
